Washington DC is the best place to live if you are a woman worried about your well-being, according to a new report.
Comparing 25 of the most populated metropolitan areas in the US, Measure Of America ranked New York City 5th, Chicago 12th, LA 13th and Houston 23rd, showing that the well-being of women living in metropolitan America varies greatly.
The report examined information about each city, comparing its differences in women’s education, life expectancy, ethnicity, marital status and median earnings.
National capital: Women in Washington DC earn the most money, with a median personal income of $37,700, and have the highest levels of education, with the highest overall score of 6.8
By converting data from the American Human Development Index (AHDI) into scores rated out of 10, the analysis measured each city against each other.
Women in Washington DC earn the most money, with a median personal income of $37,700, and have the highest levels of education, with an overall AHDI score of 6.8.
The average US score is 5.03, while the overall US women’s score is 5.0.
Six out of the 25 cities were given a score below this national standard, meaning women in the majority of these metropolitan areas are faring as well as, or better than average.
The results: New York was ranked fifth, Chicago 12th, LA 13th and Houston 23rd, showing that the well-being of women living in metropolitan America varies greatly

While women in Pittsburgh have above average rates of education, they receive some of the lowest wages of the 25 cities studied, showing that the industries cities invest in could impact women’s opportunity for well-paid work.
Measure of America also analysed how women’s marital status, race and ethnicity played into their overall well-being.
Notably, the cities with a higher percentage of single women correlated to higher overall personal earnings for women.
The report also found that African-American women have the shortest life expectancy and faced specific health challenges, including higher rates of HIV infection.
Asian and Latina women tend to outlive Caucasian and African-American women, however Latina women fall behind when it comes to attaining an education.
While comparisons are often made between women and men when it comes to earnings and education, this is one of the first studies comparing the differences among women.
The report mainly links women's overall well-being to an access to opportunity.
Although this is vital to themselves, their families, and to the growth of the US as a whole, the report does fail to include, compare and rank women's safety, access to general healthcare and each city's pro-choice or pro-life stance, which are also factors critical to a women's over-all well-being.
