The anxious generation: One in ten young people fear going out with problem most common among unemployed under-25s

  • One in five said they 'fall apart' emotionally on regular basis
  • 47 per cent of unemployed young people always or often depressed
  • One in ten said they were physically attacked in their homes as a child
  • Figures produced from interviews with more than 2,000 16 to 25-year-olds

  • One in 10 young people are so anxious that they do not want to leave their home, a charity said yesterday.
Anxiety and debilitating depression are most common among unemployed teenagers and young adults, and can lead to a spiral of joblessness, the Prince’s Trust said.
It said that one in five young people say they ‘fall apart’ emotionally on a regular basis. But among the unemployed, the level rises to a third.
The figures on anxiety were produced from interviews with more than 2,000 16 to 25-year-olds for the Trust’s annual youth index.

Chief executive Martina Milburn said: ‘Thousands of young people feel like prisoners in their own homes.
‘Without the right support, these young people become socially isolated, struggling with day-to-day life and slipping further and further from the jobs market.’
The report said almost half of unemployed young people were always or often depressed – 47 per cent. More than a third said that anxiety stopped them from looking after their health or eating properly, and half said that anxiety went as far as being scared about life in general.

It also found that one in 10 young people said they had been physically attacked in their home as a child, around the same number said they had been scared of adults as a child, and a quarter had no-one to turn to to talk about their troubles while they were growing up.
One in seven said the adults in their life when they were children were ‘unpredictable’.
Miss Milburn said: ‘Too many young people are growing up in fear of the very people who are supposed to protect them.’
