Just say neigh: TOWIE star Lauren Pope is a fan of her big, white teeth
TOWIE star Lauren Pope claims to ‘love’ her pearly-white teeth but a top dentist has warned such drastic cosmetic works could leave patients needing dentures by the time they’re 40.
Dr Mervyn Druian reveals that he twice turned down 30-year-old Lauren, after she came to him pleading for a full set of veneers.
‘Her teeth were perfect,’ he says. ‘I had to say no, as treatment would have been inappropriate.’
Veneers are fine, ceramic or plastic coatings that are bonded to the teeth to give a more uniform appearance – but fitting them involves filing away some healthy tooth enamel.
If done well, they can last 20 years or more, but poorly fitted veneers can easily dislodge and crack, meaning they must be replaced.
That involves more filing away of the healthy tooth.
‘Every time you have to redo them, you have to take away a little bit more of the underlying tooth,’ says Dr Druian.
The worry is that eventually the tooth can’t be filed down any further and will have to be completely replaced.
Dr Druian advises conservative treatment where possible. ‘For most patients, we’d give orthodontic treatment combined with whitening and one or two veneers,’ he says.
He claims the Made In Chelsea set – which includes his clients – are far better dental role models as reality stars go.
‘They always go for a very natural look, with few veneers. It’s the TOWIE cast who want that very fake-looking image.’
Dr Druian, whose London Centre for Cosmetic Dentistry is currently offering a special ‘kiss with confidence’ dental hygiene treatment for Valentine’s Day, adds: ‘We do have to turn away patients who come in with perfect teeth wanting work done
'. It is possible that they have other issues worrying them.’

Official: Everybody does need good Neighbours
Living in Ramsay Street, with neighbours constantly popping round uninvited, might be your worst nightmare.
But TV’s Neighbours, which shot Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan to fame in the 1980s, is the perfect example of the sort of close-knit community that can lower your risk of having a stroke, say experts.
A study of 6,740 people found that those who lived in friendly environments are between 15 and 48 per cent less likely to suffer the condition. The University of Michigan research, published in Social Science And Medicine, suggests social interaction and trust are important to reducing the risk of stroke.
Eye-saver: You may be able to save your sight if you stop smoking
Stub it out and save your sight
Quitting smoking could save your sight by cutting your risk of developing cataracts, researchers say.
A study in Sweden looked at 5,700 men aged 45 to 79 and the link between smoking and cataract removal over 12 years.
Cataracts are a condition in which the lens of the eye becomes cloudy and are a major cause of vision loss.
Middle-aged men who smoked 15 cigarettes a day could reduce their risk of cataracts over two decades by giving up.
The study found that men who smoked were 42 per cent more likely to have cataract removal than those who never smoked.
More than 20 years after quitting the habit, they had halved their risk.
Feeling tired? Then you need a consistent daily routine, according to a new study. Researchers at Alabama University looked at 100 adults who recorded their daily routines over a 14-day period.
They concluded that those who went to work, ate meals and went outside at regular times fell asleep faster at bedtime, slept better and woke fewer times in the night than those in the study whose activities were more random.
If you’ve ever wondered about what sort of chemicals are lurking in your make-up, a free iPhone app called Think Dirty might help you make cleaner choices.
According to Environmental Working Group, a Washington DC-based advocacy research group that looks into toxic substances, women are exposed to some 168 chemicals in beauty products every day.
The app scans the product’s barcode and gives it a rating based on the ingredients and chemicals used in it.
