'I'm going to give birth to my grandchild': Grandmother, 49, offers to be surrogate for her 27-year-old cancer survivor daughter

Sarah Donaghey’s dreams of motherhood were shattered when she was told the only cure for her cervical cancer was a hysterectomy.

However, the 27-year-old now has a chance of having a baby because her mother, 49-year-old Linda Donaghey, has offered to be a surrogate.

Ms Donaghey, a sales administrator from Leeds, was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of the cancer when she was just 25, the Sunday Mirror reports.

She was devastated when she was told that the only way to save her life would be to remove her womb.

However, she was given a glimmer of hope as surgeons were able to save her ovaries which tests last February revealed were still producing eggs.

Within months of her hysterectomy, Ms Donaghey and her partner, Stuart Simpson, 26, started to research surrogacy.

Ms Donaghey told the Sunday Mirror: ‘Our biggest worry was that even if the surrogate is pregnant with a baby that is biologically ours, legally she is the mum. We worried she wouldn’t be able to give up our baby.’

She explained how she was discussing the problem with her mother, when the grandmother-of-three said that she would act as a surrogate.

She told the Sunday Mirror: ‘I didn’t have to think twice about it. I found it heart breaking that she’d had to go through such a terrible ordeal at such a young age.

She added: ‘Some friends think I am mad but I didn’t have to think twice about offering to have a baby for Sarah. I just see it as some early babysitting.’

However, the family has now hit another setback as their local authority has informed them that they will not pay for the IVF treatment required to allow Linda to carry Sarah and Stuart’s child, because Ms Simpson already has a daughter, Lola, from a previous relationship.

As a result, they now face a race against time to raise the £7,000 needed before Mrs Donaghey reaches her 50th birthday, after which doctors will be reluctant to allow her to be a surrogate.

'I just saw it as babysitting': Woman, 49, gives birth to her GRANDSON after being surrogate for daughter with heart condition

A 49-year-old northern Maine woman kept her word to act as a surrogate mother, and has given birth to her grandson.

Linda Sirois of Madawaska, carried and delivered baby Madden Hebert, because her daughter Angel Hebert, 25, has a heart condition which would make pregnancy unsafe.

Seven pound, 14 ounce baby Madden was born Aug. 13. His mother says he's 'eating like a champ and he doesn't fuss too much.'

Sirois said she's offered for years to become a surrogate mother for Angel her if a doctor said she shouldn't become pregnant. Hebert, of Presque Isle, said she and husband Brian Hebert got that word last summer.

Angel's egg, fertilized with Brian Hebert's sperm, was successfully implanted.

'It was all pretty simple as far as I was concerned,' said Linda to the Portland Press Herald.

With her daughter's heart condition ruling out a 100 percent safe pregnancy, Hebert decided to ask her mother if she would be willing to act as a surrogate.

'It was pretty disappointing and we were pretty upset about it,' said Hebert. 

'But we kind of had an idea that it was a possibility and, all along, my mother was saying, 'I'm here and I can carry for you.' I guess we didn't really take her seriously.

'I called her last summer and I'm like, 'So, you know that offer you've been offering? Is that offer still on the table?'

Unfortunately most of the fertility clinics in the area turned Sirois down.

Eventually the Reprodcutive Science Center in Lexington, Massachusetts accepted the nearly 50-year-old Sirois, on stringent conditions.

Implanted with her daughter's fertilised egg, Sirois became pregnant during the first round of IVF treatment.

Sirois described the pregnancy as the easiest of her previous three, with no morning sickness or complications.

'I didn't have any young children around -- my youngest are in college -- so that made it easier,' she said.

Delivered by C-section on August 13th, the birth of baby Madden was a joyous occasion.

'It was awesome,' said Hebert, who was in the delivery room with her mother.

'It was an awesome, awesome experience.'

With the community of Madawaska coming together to celebrate the birth, Sirois was grateful she had come through the pregnancy in good health.

'I had so many well wishes and encouragement, even strangers in the community,' said Sirois.

'I just saw it as I was babysitting for a few months.

'It was their child all along. It was just a room for rent.'
